Betta Ich-X Protocol: Safeguarding Your Solo Swimmer

Treating a single Betta is high-stakes. Here is how to use Ich-X in small Betta tanks without causing further stress.

Bettas are hardy, but their elaborate fins make them perfect targets for Ich. Because Ich parasites burrow into the skin, a Betta’s thin, flowing fins are often the first place you'll see those telltale white spots. If left untreated, Ich can lead to "fin melt" and secondary bacterial infections that are much harder to cure.

Ich-X is arguably the best medication for Bettas. It contains a higher quality of Malachite Green and Formalin than cheaper alternatives, which is crucial for a fish as delicate as a Betta. But since most Bettas live in smaller tanks (5-10 gallons), the margin for error is thin.

The Small Tank Dosing Challenge

Ich-X standard dose is 1 teaspoon (5mL) per 10 gallons. In a 5-gallon tank, that's just 2.5mL. If you're "eyeballing" it, you're playing a dangerous game. Overdosing Ich-X in a small volume can irritate the Betta's labyrinth organ—the specialized organ they use to breathe air at the surface.

Step-by-Step Betta Recovery Routine

  1. Reduce Flow: If you have an adjustable filter, turn it down. Bettas are easily exhausted when they're sick, and fighting a current while dealing with Ich is too much stress.
  2. Keep it Clean: Perform a 25% water change before every dose. Removing the buildup of waste allows the Ich-X to focus entirely on the parasites.
  3. Temperature: Ensure your heater is set to 80°F (27°C). This speeds up the parasite's life cycle but is still comfortable for a tropical Betta.

Special Tip: The Plastic Cup Trick

Bettas like to hide. During treatment, their usual hiding spots might be stained by the blue dye in Ich-X. If you have expensive ceramic or light-colored decor, remove it and replace it with a clean plastic cup or some PVC pipe for the duration of the treatment. It gives them security without the risk of permanent staining.

Monitoring the Labyrinth Organ

Watch your Betta for 30 minutes after each dose. Because they breathe air from the surface, they are more sensitive to chemical vapors. If you see your Betta darting wildly to the surface or coughing, perform an immediate water change. To prevent this, always mix your Ich-X into a cup of tank water before pouring it into the aquarium.

Carbon Removal

Most Betta hobbist filters (like sponge filters or small HOBs) rely on small carbon cartridges. You must remove the carbon. If you leave it in, the meds will be gone in 20 minutes, and the Ich will win.

Aftercare

Once the treatment is done and the spots have been gone for 3 days, perform a 50% water change and put fresh carbon back into your filter. This is a great time to use a product like Seachem StressGuard or API Stress Coat to help the Betta's slime coat recover from the chemical exposure.
